COMMUNITY GIVES TO THE HOMELESS

BAKERSFIELD COMMUNITY TOOK CARE OF THE REST!

Vicki Davis had been homeless on and off for more than 30 years. "I don't remember dates," she said, but Christine Lollar, United Way of Kern County's Director of Homelessness Resources for the Kern County Homeless Collaborative was able to verify (between Vicki's recollections of events and that of a family member) that she lived at Tent City for five years and hasn't had a place to call home since 1986.

Corporation for Better Housing (CBH) as a property developer was able to help Vicki get into an apartment and now they are her landlord. With their help, along with the help of Independent Living Center of Kern County (ILCKC), together they are working with Vicki to help make the transition into being housed as successful as possible. Both CBH and ILCKC are members of the Collaborative.

Looking to support the service providers of the Homeless Collaborative United Way was able to put a plea out to the public and ask for help to furnish Vicki's apartment. She literally came with the clothes on her back and one pair of flip flops. Well Bakersfield Community - you took care of that!

People thought they were donating items but what they really gave was Vicki her life back! More than a dozen individuals reached out to donate: dishes, pans, utensils, towels, basic kitchen items, food, decorations (including a collector’s porcelain red-headed fairy), dining set, books, clothes, a living room set, toiletries, cleaning products, and more!

Other families and individuals are being housed weekly by service providers of the KCHC. Furniture can be picked up. Clothes can be donated at various sites (or picked up along with furniture).
